Liverpool: The Gift of Love

“We’ve got this gift of love, but love is like a precious plant.
You can’t just accept it and leave it in the cupboard or just think it’s going to get on by itself.
You’ve got to keep watering it. You’ve got to really look after it and nurture it”
– John Lennon

We visited Laurie’s nan at Blackpool and it was my very first time to actually meet her in person. The last time we were in UK in 2013, I wasn’t able to meet her, then she’s too weak already to fly to France for our wedding (she’s 96!). I am so delighted to finally meet her, she’s lovely! No wonder Laurie (and the rest of their family) adores her. At her age, she’s full of joy and fun! Her sense of humour cracks me up everytime and I can’t cope up with her drinking haha!

I dedicated my previous entry for her (as well as this one). CLICK HERE to see my entry for Cotswold-Gloucestershire.

We spent a night at her place, and going back to Stroud, we stopped by for few hours in Liverpool as I requested. I want to see Liverpool mainly because of The Beatles history there, so even if Laurie and mum Hilly are not Beatles fans, they granted my request hehe. Besides, Everton is Laurie’s favorite football league anyway (though he’s into rugby more) and mum said she has never been to Liverpool again for many years.

Liverpool is called as the “World’s Capital City of Pop” because of the obvious reason, The Beatles, and some other popular mainstream bands in UK, which gain Liverpool’s popularity as tourist destination. It was described by The English Heritage as the Finest Victorian city in England because of the value of the architecture and design of the buildings there.

I was with Laurie and mum Hilly walking around Liverpool’s city centre, mostly the UNESCO’s World Heritage Sites in Maritime Mercantile City because that’s where we parked and started our own city walk tour. Our main goal is to walk from here and get to the famous Cavern Club and have some drinks before we head off back to Stroud.

Some of the places we saw were:

  1. Albert Dock

This is where we parked our car. Liverpool is the main British port and one of the most important docks in the world because it’s one of the most advance docks anywhere in the world.

  1. The Beatles Story Museum

It’s within the Albert Dock, but I didn’t go inside because I don’t want Laurie and mum Hilly to wait for me outside for a long time. They are not interested to go in so we just went inside the Fab Four Café and checked out some souvenir items instead. My parents were huge fans of The Beatles, perhaps if they are still alive, I would have gone inside the museum and take pictures for them though…

  1. Pier Head

Close to Albert Dock is the Pier Head is this waterfront where the “Three Graces” stands: – the Royal Liver Building, the Cunard Building and the Port of Liverpool Building. These buildings were marks of great wealth of Liverpool in the 19th-20th century when it was built.

  1. William Brown Street

This street will lead us to The Cavern Pub, but also this street is also part of UNESCO’s World Heritage Site apart from Albert Dock and Pier Head. This street is an array of historical buildings built in Georgian and Victorian architecture. Though there are already modern buildings built around it.

  1. Cavern Club

We saw few places but the best we had was chilling out at Cavern Club at 10 Matthew Street, we got lost a bit but we found the narrow alley. It’s opposite the Cavern Pub where there’s a bronze statue of John Lennon, and brickwall putting all the name of the bands and solo performers who performed in cavern Club in the past.

Cavern Club is the centre of rock and roll scene in the 60’s where The Beatles played in their early years, including several other bands like Rolling Stones, The Who, etc. It was closed down in the 70’s due to an underground railway construction. Then it reopened in the 80’s and featured several bands again like Oasis, Arctic Monkeys, Adele, Jessie J, etc.

And that ends our short stop over trip in Liverpool. I hope to see more other places and cities around England. Each place I explore in England is very interesting on its own and I’m looking forward on seeing more on our future holidays.

We promised Nan that we would try our best to visit her every year. We should actually because at her age, there may not be more time for us to know each other. I was only with her for 2 days, but she already made me feel we knew each other for a long time now. She’s so easy to love. I just hope that in time, she will also feel the same for me, she may have said to me that she’s happy to meet and that she’s happy that her grandson is happy with me too, but I still want to spend more time with her to nurture that “love” even at this little time given to both of us.

Ah, I miss all her jokes! 😉
